Omnisend is a solid overall platform for ecommerce brands, but not without flaws. Namely, if you hit the sending rate limits OR struggle with a lack of deeper data analytics, it might be time to consider an alternative.
I’ve used Omnisend – and almost every competitor – over the last few years. Dedicated ecommerce senders are a distinct breed these days, so there’s actually some email marketing diversity to choose from.
For the purposes of this guide, I’ve kept the focus to ecommerce sellers and features I’d want as an seller. I suppose there are other use cases for Omnisend, but I’m guessing fairly exceptional relative to the norm.
With that being said, here’s how I’d grade out the top Omnisend competitors worth considering:
Klaviyo: Best Overall Omnisend Alternative
Kurze Zusammenfassung: Klaviyo is by far the elephant in the room. It’s the first place I’d check if Omnisend isn’t quite doing it for me as it shares their dedicated ecommerce focus.
Why I Like Klaviyo
- Built for eCom: For me, this kind of is the most critical point. Klaviyo is the market leading in ecommerce messaging. Period. Full stop. This means that the entire platform is subtly geared towards a more specific type of users. This influences everything from their marketing language, support documentation, UX choices, pre-built sequences, and core functionality. It’s hard to describe succinctly, but it’s dozens of optimized decisions based on the ecom operator that add up to a best in class experience.
- Integrated SMS: Klaviyo traditionally was email first, but they’ve recently stepped up their SMS marketing game significantly. I used to recommend operators take a look at other platforms specifically for SMS (and integrate back with Klaviyo), but I’m not so sure this is wise anymore. Mainly, Klaviyo integrates their impressive data suite (see below) across both SMS and email profiles for a full 365 view of what’s going on, what’s working, and where to optimize engagements.
- Better Data Views: Klaviyo collects an overwhelming array of data and (mostly) makes it easily accessible. At times I’ve had to work with a third party consultant to properly pull out everything I wanted to see… but the data is there. This is a huge advantage over many generalist email marketing services.
- Best in Class Integrations: As the market leader for ecom email marketing, Klaviyo has BY FAR the most integrations of any ecom email marketing platform. This alone is a super power. And there’s some pretty deep, out of the way, integrations.
- Excellent Preset Sequences & Templates: Another huge selling point for me is the number of templates and pre-built sequences that you can simply plug and play into your store for overnight value unlocks. Given their history, these are some of the best ecommerce focused, conversion optimized templates.

ActiveCampaign: Deepest Automations
Kurze Zusammenfassung: I’ve long been a fan – and user – of ActiveCampaign for many of my businesses. Specifically, ActiveCampaign thrives as an automation builder, with one of the most robust tools and options available for automating funnels.
Why I Like ActiveCampaign
- Customizable Pricing Packages: One of my favorite parts about ActiveCampaign is that while they’ve massively expanded their features over the years, they’ve still also offered entry leveling plans, solutions, and pricing for everyday SMBs. This means that ActiveCampaign has the potential to grow WITH you and there’s something for everyone (even if it’s initially a bit hard to sort out which plan is specifically right for you).
- Excellent CRM Features for Sales Teams: ActiveCampaign has followed the Hubspot path, without forcing users down it. For sales focused organizations, their sales enablement and CRM features are a growing draw for many organizations.
- Deep Integrations: As one of the first email automation platforms, ActiveCampaign thrives in the integration department. Virtually every platform (major and some very obscure) integrate with ActiveCampaign natively.
- Strong Testing Framework: AC lets you set up a robust testing framework with A/B/C/D/E testing and dynamic data reports on what’s working (or not). This is a strong advantage for established senders where smaller tweaks can drive significant uplift.

Sendlane: Best for High Send Volume
Kurze Zusammenfassung: Sendlane is a smaller peer of Omnisend, also focused on the ecommerce space and offering some distinct advantages when it comes to higher send volume customers, multivariate testing, and real-time reporting analytics.
Why I Like Sendlane
- Higher Send Volume Pricing: Sendlane’s pricing starts at 500,000 emails (sent per month), which definitely tells you everything you need to know about Sendlane’s positioning. I do think this is smart as the market is flooded with generalist, “me too” email send platforms. Sendlane is definitely targeting higher volume DTC ecommerce brands. Their pricing structure (like Brevo – below) is based around usage, not fixed contact tiers. I’m a big fan of this pricing strategy for brands who have variable send cadences, BUT Sendlane clearly targets the tier above. Because of this, their pricing really appeals to established brands looking to trim email marketing costs. This change is fairly recent!
- Built-in SMS: Sendlane has taken a page from Omnisend and Klaviyo’s book and builds in SMS marketing as a core inclusive offering, meaning you don’t have to work with different send platforms or try to piece together customer data.
- Real-time Analytics: Sendlane stands out from others (even Omnisend) with their focus on real-time messaging analytics. This is useful for everyone, but ideal for brands with frequent “sales events” or huge anchor events (Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Valentines Day, etc..). I’d also expect this to be useful for brands that do flash sales, having limited run inventory or highly leverage social (viral) selling.
- Pre-built Funnels: While not as exhaustive as Klaviyo, Sendlane does have over 50 prebuilt sequences for both email, SMS and integrated campaigns, making it easier to get some wins on the board quickly.
Sendlane versus Others:
Brevo: Best Cost Savings
Kurze Zusammenfassung: Brevo is an established, if lesser known, Omnisend alternative that offers good transactional email infrastructure for ecommerce AND has a “pay per send” pricing model that can be much more cost-effective compared to Omnisend (depending on your send volume).
Why I Like Brevo
- Pay Per Send Pricing: For brands and organizations burned by heavy headed subscriber based billing terms, Brevo is sweet relief! Their pay per send model is better suited to actual use vs “gotcha” billing gimmicks. For anyone who has struggled (like me) to remove unsubscribed emails from your Mailchimp billables, you know what I’m talking about… Brevo even has a “pay as you go” model for those who don’t actually send emails every month.
- Fully Functional Free Plan: I’ve been frustrated lately with many email marketing platforms that don’t offer fully usable free plans OR have skipped them altogether in favor of 30 day trials. I don’t know about you, but it takes me a lot longer than 30 days to fully get used to a platform! Thankfully, Brevo has an entirely usable basic plan for up to 300 sends per day. This safely
- Transactional Focus: While perhaps less overtly ecommerce focused than Omnisend, Brevo does have a strong history and feature set for transactional commerce, offering robust templates and presets for both transactional SMS and tradtional email marketing campaigns.
- Extensible CRM Functionality: Brevo borrows a bit from peers like ActiveCampaign and Mailchimp, with CRM functionality available if you need it. This is a nice to have (for me, at least), that sets it apart from Omnisend.
Brevo versus the Alternatives:

Privy: Easiest to Implement
Kurze Zusammenfassung: I love Privy for it’s focus on simplicity and usability. Rather than overwhelming brands with features and choose your own adventure pricing mazes, Privy focuses on the things that are proven to work and delivers in an easy-to-implement platform.
Why I Like Privy
- Implement in an Afternoon: Privy features a one-click Shopify store integration and an easy setup process. If you’ve been procrastinating getting your email marketing plan in place, Privy makes it dead simple to get started with the core presets (like cart abandonement upsells, etc..) to drive ROI.
- Strong SMS Too: Like Omnisend, Privy offers integrated SMS sending as well, but has flexible pricing based on each respective contact list sizes.
- Pop-up Tools: Privy also includes a sleek suite of popup and optin forms to easily optimize your store for email collection.
- Spin to Wins: If you’ve seen those spin to win slide ins on competitor stores, Privy offers this built in (no additional cost).

Mailerlite: Best Free Plan
Kurze Zusammenfassung: Mailerlite is a longtime favorite of mine because it has all the core automation fucntionality you need, coupled with one of the widest third party integration ecosystems. Best of all, their basic plan is functional and free up to 1,000 subs.
Why I Like Mailerlite
- Robust Free Tier: I personally love using Mailerlite for sites where I don’t quite know what I want to do with a list yet, but want to start collecting emails in the meantime. This is because their form builders + free tier up to 1,000 subs gives me a great toolset to get an email list off the ground without being pressured into paid plans.
- Affordable Paid Tier: When you DO have to upgrade to a paid plan, Mailerlite also will not break the back. They start off at just $15/month for 2,500 subscribers (for example), which is slightly more affordable than Omnisend out of the gate.
- Widely Integrated: Having been around for decades now, Mailerlite is one of the best integrated email platforms out there, with every established and some really boutique third party integrations available.
- Embeded Forms: I like Mailerlite for their extensive form options that are completely embeddable. In contrast to Omnisend which is specifically focused on ecommerce platform integrations, Mailerlite embeds can be place in a variety of locations (bespoke and customized). I find this particularly useful for stores, blogs, or other custom non-standard tech stacks.
Mailerlite vs Other Competitors:
- Mailerlite vs Brevo
- Mailerlite vs ActiveCampaign
- Mailerlite vs Flodesk
- Mailerlite vs Mailchimp
- Mailerlite vs ConvertKit (now Kit)
Shopify Email: Cheap & Easy
Kurze Zusammenfassung: Shopify Email has the advantage of being native for Shopify sellers, easy to implement, and easy to use (also easy on the budget).
Why I Like Shopify Email
- Cheap: It’s completely free to start and stays that way up to your first 10,000 email sends each month (also love the send based vs list based pricing). Pricing increase at $1 for every additional 1,000 sends each month.
- Einfach: Click, click, click… done! It’s pretty simple, by design.
- Seamless: As a native Shopify app… by Shopify, getting setup with a solid email infrastructure is really quite flawless if you are already running Shopify.
- Great Start Option: If you want to start growing your email list, but aren’t quite sure what you are going to do with it yet, adding the free Shopify email app and setting up some native opt-ins is a great first step. You don’t have to have it all figured out right away!
So Which to go with?
If you are still on the fence, here’s generally how I’d narrow it down:
- Need something with more ecommerce horsepower? The clear market leader with deeper data insights and more ready-to-use templates is definitely Klaviyo here. Their pricing is now also quite competitive with Omnisend (unlike a few years back).
- Need more customized automations & CRM features? Go with the deepest automated platform out there with ActiveCampaign here.
- Need to save some money? Consider the innovative “pay per send” multiple with Brevo here so that you can more tightly contrl your OpEx.
