In this comparison SE Ranking vs SEMrush, we will dive in to discuss the key differences between these two leading SEO tools and to make it easier for you to decide which is best for your business.
Bottom Line Up Front Summary: If you are looking for a one-stop SEO suite with best-in-class data sources and tools, it’s hard to beat SEMrush here. SEMrush just offers a more complete dashboard and industry-leading data accuracy. That said, SE Ranking is an up and coming SEO suite to watch and currently a good budget alternative!
I use a LOT of tools. Probably more than I need to. There are a few that are truly indispensable. I have a SEMrush tab open EVERY day as I work. Keyword searches, technical audits, competitor analysis? It does it all. Try it out for free.
Don’t you find it ironic that while Google widely avails its search data for free, SEO toolkits don’t come cheap?
Imagine how it would be like if we were able to use multiple toolkits at once, just like we do with search engines. At the moment, we can easily switch between Google, Yahoo, and Bing. But, when it comes to their corresponding SEO toolkits, only large digital marketing agencies can afford the resources to splurge on numerous software at once.
Sadly, that’s typically out of the reach of standard site owners and businesses because all-in-one SEO toolkits are considerably expensive. I’ve been there, and I know how it feels when you can’t pick more than one.
Consequently, you can bet I understand how overwhelming the selection process can get. There are way too many SEO toolkits on the web. And to make matters worse, most of them are seemingly similar. You can hardly tell the difference between them going by their features alone.
Consider our case with SE Ranking vs SEMrush, for instance. On its main site, SE Ranking claims to be an “All-Inclusive Cloud-based SEO Software”. Then SEMrush, on the other hand, touts itself as an “All-In-One-Marketing-Toolkit”.
Confusing, right? Well, it gets better.
When you briefly scan through their corresponding features, it turns out they both provide keyword research, keyword suggestion, position tracking, backlink analysis, backlink monitoring, competitor analysis, social media management, and much more. Tough choice.
Ok, I’ll admit SEMrush might look tempting at first because it’s seemingly a well-established brand. It has been in the game for much longer than SE Ranking, plus it appears to be more popular.
In all fairness, however, that wouldn’t be enough to write off SE Ranking. Besides, you can tell right off the bat that SEMrush is the costliest option here.
But, make no mistake. SE Ranking is not some random cheap fly-by-knight company. It’s far from that actually, and it’s visible from the website. The software company even claims to have 300,000 users already. Plus, it continues to enjoy favorable user ratings online.
Therefore, from the look of things, we have ourselves a hard nut to crack here. Otherwise, making the wrong choice would mean compromising your entire website’s SEO.
And that’s precisely why we analyzed both toolkits in detail. This SE Ranking vs SEMrush review explains everything comprehensively, including their respective tools, features, accuracy levels, and pricing. In the end, you should be able to make a conclusive decision on the best SEO toolkit for your website.
SE Ranking vs SEMrush – Overview
I use a LOT of tools. Probably more than I need to. There are a few that are truly indispensable. I have a SEMrush tab open EVERY day as I work. Keyword searches, technical audits, competitor analysis? It does it all. Try it out for free.
SE Ranking
Since 2011, SE Ranking has been the type of software you turn to when you’re working on a holistic SEO marketing strategy. It’s a cloud-based platform that offers a combination of SEO research and optimization tools.
We’re talking about stuff like SEO audit, rank monitoring, keyword research, backlink monitoring, PPC research, on-page monitoring, etc.
The point here is to help you not only assess your site’s SEO standing, but also discover new keyword, backlink, plus ranking opportunities you could capitalize on.
I must admit, however, that the fun part is learning more about your competitors. SE Ranking happens to also be a spy that can dig up information to reveal your competitors’ keyword rankings, overall progress, and most importantly, their SEO strategies.
All these features combined have won the software more than 300,000 users so far, 4,000 of whom are agencies, while 12,000 are small and medium-sized businesses.
That notwithstanding, SE Ranking is seemingly built for marketing agencies. It primarily targets digital marketing companies that regularly handle multiple sites at once. That’s why, as a matter of fact, its cheapest beginner-level plan facilitates 10 websites.
Don’t get me wrong though. Although agencies form the largest chunk of users here, you can still leverage SE Ranking as an online business, startup, or a solo site owner.
Whichever group you belong to, some of the features you can access include white labeling, page monitoring, social media management, SEO reporting, marketing plan, SEO competitor research, keyword grouping, keyword research, backlink checker, etc.
SEMrush
SEMrush is known extensively in the SEO marketing circles. Way more than SE Ranking to be precise. But then again, I guess you could argue that having been introduced in 2008, SEMrush has had more time to establish itself in the market.
Fair enough. And yes, that’s right. SEMrush has been around for over a decade now, and it’s recognized as one of the best SEO research tools on the web.
More specifically, it provides organic research capabilities along with keyword suggestions, SEO audit, ad research, traffic analytics, rank tracking, and competitor research.
So, in other words, SEMrush is seemingly a mirrored version of SE Ranking and vice versa. Not entirely though. For the most part, SEMrush and SE Ranking apply varying approaches when it comes to research plus analytics. We’ll dive into such details shortly.
But, before we even get to that, it’s evident that SEMrush is attempting to set itself apart from the rest of the SEO research tools by claiming to be an “All-in-one Digital Marketing Suite.”
Well, that might be true. Because, as it turns out, SEMrush goes above and beyond SEO to support social media marketing too. It comes in handy as a social media tracker and research tool that provides relevant intelligence about your campaigns and the corresponding competitors’ strategies as well.
On the face of it, therefore, SEMrush might look like an ultimate toolkit for digital marketers. Hence, it’s extensive user base of more than 1 million users.
You can bet most of them are marketing professionals. All the packages here are tailored to the needs of busy agencies that serve numerous client sites at once. And by leveraging over 28 tools that SEMrush comes with, they get to learn about their clients’ traffic sources (traffic analysis), SEO opportunities, competitor progress, search engine rankings, ad potential, and social media popularity.
Sounds impressive. But, how does it actually compare with SE Ranking?
Here’s the complete analysis of SE Ranking vs SEMrush main features to answer that…
I use a LOT of tools. Probably more than I need to. There are a few that are truly indispensable. I have a SEMrush tab open EVERY day as I work. Keyword searches, technical audits, competitor analysis? It does it all. Try it out for free.
SE Ranking vs SEMrush – Main Features
Ease of Use
SE Ranking Ease of Use
Fortunately, you don’t have to pay a dime to get a taste of SE Ranking’s features. There’s a 14-day free trial period for all new users, which grants you access to its features. Plus, you get your own personal assistant to help with the onboarding process.
Once you get started, the first thing you’ll notice about SE Ranking is its straightforward system. While SEO analysis can be a complex undertaking when you focus on multiple parameters simultaneously, SE Ranking manages to simplify everything for you.
It starts off by requesting your site details, targeted keywords, and main competitors before it ultimately proceeds to conduct a quick SEO audit of your site’s SEO health, plus the corresponding keyword rankings.
And in case of any difficulties, SE Ranking provides a live chat button at the bottom of the screen. But I guess you won’t need it any point as the whole layout is pleasantly simple for everyone, including beginners.
SE Ranking is a host of many tools combined. However, it chooses not to bombard you with everything at once and instead, groups all its functionalities into 5 main menu options- Dashboard, Projects, Report Builder, Users, plus Tools.
Consequently, the last thing you can expect here is getting lost. The whole SE Ranking system has been organized neatly to eliminate the need for an onboarding process. In fact, there’s barely any learning curve. You should be able to find your way around right off the bat.
That’s commendable. But, interestingly, SE Ranking doesn’t stop there. It also attempts to help you formulate effective marketing strategies, through a tool called “Marketing Plan”.
Personally, I found that to be quite resourceful since it offers a comprehensive SEO checklist to get you started. And although it would seem like beginners are its main targets, this checklist is beneficial to even advanced SEO markers. Otherwise, it would be difficult to ascertain that you’re on the right track.
SEMrush Ease of Use
Although SEMrush takes a different approach compared to SE Ranking, it doesn’t lose that touch of straightforwardness.
As you get started, the first step is typing your domain name and hitting the “Start Now” button. SEMrush will proceed to conduct a quick analysis of your website’s SEO, and the subsequent report will display your organic search traffic figures, the main competitors (keyword competition) plus a corresponding competitive positioning map, the site’s inbound backlinks (referring domains, domain rating, anchor text, etc…), paid search traffic statistics, as well as the top-performing organic keywords.
Sadly, the interface here has a lot going on at the same time. And it’s all because SEMrush chooses to focus on providing comprehensive insights at the cost of simplicity.
Instead of organizing its numbers and functions accordingly, SEMrush throws everything your way once you log into your account. The dashboard stats, for instance, do not follow a systematic structure. SEMrush seemingly uses a random placement pattern, which essentially clutters the dashboard and makes it hard for beginners to piece everything together.
As if that’s not confusing enough, SEMrush then goes ahead and fills up its menu area with way too many options. The left display panel on the layout now looks more of an item list than the menu of a serious software platform.
Well, you might argue that SEMrush was forced to do so because it carries numerous tools. Fine. But, here’s the thing. There are better and simpler ways of organizing all that. SEMrush could, for example, start by taking a couple of lessons from SE Ranking.
In the meantime, let’s be honest about it. SEMrush might be a streamlined marketing intelligence tool alright, but its overall layout is a mess that needs to be cleaned up. A beginner would certainly take some time to get used to how things work around here.
SE Ranking vs SEMrush Ease of Use Verdict (Winner: SE Ranking)
Getting started with SE Ranking or SEMrush is pretty straightforward. Nothing’s complicated, even for beginners. Just type in your details and voila! Their systems proceed to conduct deep SEO research for a couple of minutes before they finally generate the corresponding insights.
Now, the dashboard is where things start to get a bit different. SE Ranking comes with an incredibly neat and intuitive system, while SEMrush on the other hand, is a forest of sorts. The lack of proper organization here means it could take you some time to learn the ropes.
So, all in all, SE Ranking is the winner of the SE Ranking vs SEMrush Ease of Use round.
Keyword Research
SE Ranking: Keyword Research
Although you won’t find it directly on the Tools tab, Keyword Research is one of the main tools offered by SE Ranking. It’s best accessed by clicking on the SEO/Competitor Research tool, which should then reveal a subset of resources for researching about paid and organic keywords plus their accompanying traffic patterns.
That said, the Keyword Research is your go-to section when you want to uncover a specific keyword’s search metrics. SE Ranking will give you a list of its top ranking websites, the primary related and similar keywords, the popular keyword ads, as well as the accompanying Keyword Effectiveness Index.
Normally, the lower the KEI, the harder it is to rank for that specific keyword.
SE Ranking: Keyword Suggestions
If you’re looking to discover new keywords for your website, I’d advise you to start with SE Ranking’s “Keyword Suggestions” tool.
The trick here is to type in your URL, domain or any basic keyword, and SE Ranking will handle the rest. It basically analyzes more than 2 billion search terms in its extensive database to generate the most relevant keywords for your site.
However, if your country isn’t featured on the list of database territories, you can choose to have SE Ranking run the scan through Google’s default search system. This should be good enough to uncover the top keywords in your country’s version of Google.
The process itself takes up to 10 minutes. But, at the end of it all, you’ll have a solid list of keywords to keep you busy for a whole year or so.
SE Ranking: Keyword Grouper
The “Keyword Grouper” is the tool you turn to when you need to plan your website’s SEO architecture. Or in short, when you have multiple keyword suggestions that require proper segmentation.
After specifying your keywords, SE Ranking goes ahead and clusters them intelligently based on the URLs that appear on the corresponding SERPs.
Subsequently, you get to establish a perfect keyword distribution framework for your web pages.
SE Ranking: Search Volume Checker
SE Ranking’s Search Volume Checker comes in handy for reviewing the typical search volume for various keywords in a month. Consequently, you can use it to estimate the amount of traffic you can expect from your keywords.
SE Ranking: Paid Traffic Research
Another tool you can find among SE Ranking’s SEO/PPC Competitor Research resources is Paid Traffic Research. This one helps you explore various PPC keyword options you could leverage for your ad campaigns.
The Ad History section, on the other hand, reveals the past traffic trends of various paid keywords.
SEMrush: Keyword Research
The Keyword Research tool here is pretty similar to what we’ve already explored on SE Ranking. After you enter a particular keyword, SEMrush will generate organic and paid traffic details of related terms, including their monthly search volume, the number of search results, cost per click, top-ranking domains, etc.
SEMrush: Keyword Difficulty
SEMrush’s Keyword Difficulty tool, on the other hand, is more like SE Ranking’s Keyword Effectiveness Index.
Just as its name suggests, its dives deep into the search result data to establish your chances of ranking for a specific keyword. So, in the end, you should be able to identify the keywords that you can proceed to focus on, based on the ease of ranking for them.
SEMrush: Keyword Magic Tool
Ever felt like you’re running out of relevant keywords for your site’s SEO? Well, SEMrush’s Keyword Magic Tool is the type of resource you go to for help when you’re faced with such a dilemma.
And yes, that’s right. It works like SE Ranking’s Keyword Suggestions. You just need to specify a base keyword and SEMrush will do the magic for you. It helps you discover numerous related long-tail keywords you could use on your site’s content and ad campaigns.
Then get this. SEMrush even goes much further than SE Ranking by revealing additional details for each keyword, including the search trends, keyword difficulty, CPC, etc. And apart from generating the related terms, you can find alternatives that happen to be either exact matches, phrase marches, or broad matches of the keywords.
SEMrush: Ad Research
SEMrush matches up to SE Ranking’s Paid Traffic Research Tool with its own set of Ad Research tools. They essentially dive deep into Google’s PPC data to reveal traffic patterns for various keywords, the keywords used by your competitors on banners, as well as the history metrics for paid ad keywords.
Verdict: SE Ranking vs SEMrush Research (Winner: SEMrush)
Evidently, Research is a neck-and-neck race between SE Ranking and SEMrush. They happen to match each other quite well on both organic research and ad research. SE Ranking, to begin with, has an organic research area that turns out to be almost similar to SEMrush’s organic research.
Then when it comes to keyword research, SE Ranking offers tools like Keyword Research, Keyword Suggestions, Keyword Grouper, plus Search Volume Checker, while SEMrush comes with its own Keyword Research, Keyword Difficulty, and Keyword Magic tools.
It’s also worth noting that both sets of tools provide accurate and reliable research metrics. However, after closer analysis of their respective analytics, it turns out SEMrush offers more insights than SE Ranking. Its results always relay a comprehensive set of metrics for each of the queries you run. SE Ranking, on the other hand, leaves out some details here and there.
So, SEMrush wins this SE Ranking vs SEMrush round by a razor-thin margin.
Site Auditing
SE Ranking Site Auditing
SE Ranking: Website Audit Tool
SE Ranking applies its SEO auditing prowess as soon as you enter your site’s details while signing up. Otherwise, you’ll also find the Website Audit Tool on the SEO/PPC Competitors Research area.
Now, the point here is to crawl your site to examine your webpages’ SEO health and any errors or issues that might be holding back your SEO. Some of the aspects analyzed by SE Ranking include user experience, image optimization, meta-tags, headers, content, parameters per page, XML sitemap files, plus links. They are then reviewed based on mobile and web SEO optimization rules.
In the end, the tool awards your site a score that reflects its overall SEO health. It also makes you aware of any critical and semi-important fixes you should work on to boost your ranking.
SE Ranking: On-Page Checker
The On-Page Checker, on the other hand, narrows down your audit results to focus on a specific webpage. The scan itself covers your webpage’s social signals, keyword density, page speed, headers, links, content, image optimization, index status, URL structure, title tags, meta-tags, and domain characteristics.
Any issues that are subsequently discovered are displayed along with their respective recommended fixes.
SE Ranking: Backlink Checker
When it comes to auditing backlinks on SE Ranking, its Backlink Checker is the tool for the job. It assesses your entire link framework and diagnoses any backlink issues based on parameters like social popularity, Majestic Trust Flow, Moz Domain Authority (no need for Moz Pro membership), server IP address, Google index status, Alexa rank, URL, and the number of external links.
Thankfully, you can take the analysis further by venturing out of your own website and into your competitors’ domains.
SEMrush Site Auditing
SEMrush: Site Audit Tool
SEMrush boasts of its own Site Audit Tool, which is also a crawling engine for evaluating your website’s overall SEO optimization, and diagnosing potential problems that could be hurting your site’s ranking.
Some of the elements it scans include image optimization, meta-tags, headers, content, external links, internal links, URL, code scripts, link attributes, sitemap, robots.txt, etc.
SEMrush combines all these parameters and then assigns a percentage score that summarizes your website’s SEO standing. Then to help you improve your ranking, the tool discloses all the SEO issues, as well as directions on how to resolve them.
SEMrush: On-Page SEO Checker
The SEMrush On-Page SEO Checker operates exactly like SE Ranking’s On-Page Checker. It basically applies the site auditing process, but at a much smaller scale by focusing only on the specific pages you identify.
That means you can diagnose your web pages individually to discover their potential SEO problems and then learn ways of fixing them.
SEMrush: Backlink Audit Tool
You can think of the Backlink Audit Tool as SEMrush’s link doctor. Through its integration with the Google Search Console, it digs deep into Google’s web data to generate critical intelligence about your site’s overall backlink strategy.
Eventually, you should be able to keep your backlink record clean by identifying and removing bad links, or possibly reporting some of them to the Google Disavow tool.
SEMrush: Content Analyzer
Considering content is one of the most crucial search engine optimization elements, SEMrush attempts to help you seal all its loopholes through a Content Analyzer tool.
And just like the standard audit tool, you can use it to examine your site content’s SEO health, plus reveal any underlying issues. It also comes in handy for following up on your guest posts published by third-party websites.
Verdict: SE Ranking vs SEMrush Site Auditing (Winner: SEMrush)
It turns out that both SE Ranking and SEMrush offer site audit, on-page checker, and backlink audit tools. Their jobs are, of course, to crawl and evaluate your site’s, webpages, and backlinks structures respectively, in order to help you get a good picture of your overall SEO health. That said, it’s also commendable that both tools further supplement all that with helpful pointers on how to resolve any outstanding problems.
Interestingly, however, their analysis of methodologies and award systems are considerably different. A site audit of the same site generated a score of 93% on SEMrush free trial, while SE Ranking free trial awarded it 70%.
Then on comparing their respective analysis breakdowns, we learned that while SE Ranking free trial withholds a lot of its audit information, SEMrush free trial is generous enough to give you comprehensive details about your SEO issues as well as the possible solutions. And after following up on the issues listed, we also established that SEMrush’s data is more accurate compared to SE Ranking’s.
Now, when you add that to the extra content audit tool offered by SEMrush, I guess we could conclude that SEMrush outshines its rival in the SE Ranking vs SEMrush site audit battle. But then again, by only a slight margin.

I use a LOT of tools. Probably more than I need to. There are a few that are truly indispensable. I have a SEMrush tab open EVERY day as I work. Keyword searches, technical audits, competitor analysis? It does it all. Try it out for free.
The Bottom Line: Which One is better between SE Ranking Vs SEMrush?
SE Ranking solid overall. It can conduct extensive organic research, keyword research, as well as competitor analysis. It also deserves props for its deep site auditing capabilities, decent social media tools and overall ease of use.
But, here’s the bottom line. When you compare digital marketing intelligence tools, it always comes down to the value plus accuracy of their insights. And SEMrush, as we’ve observed, outshines SE Ranking in the number of digital channels, intelligence tools, as well as the corresponding data accuracy.
Bottom Line: On that note, therefore, I’ll conclude that SEMrush is the overall winner of the SE Ranking vs SEMrush battle. SEMrush just offers a more complete dashboard and industry-leading data accuracy.
I use a LOT of tools. Probably more than I need to. There are a few that are truly indispensable. I have a SEMrush tab open EVERY day as I work. Keyword searches, technical audits, competitor analysis? It does it all. Try it out for free.
That said, which of these two would you choose?
