Shipping can be challenging for all eCommerce businesses, but for dental labs which ship fragile items on a tight turnaround for specific appointments, it can be a whole lot more stressful.
If a package gets delayed by even one day, it can throw off a dentist’s entire schedule and possibly lose them a customer. That’s why dental labs need better shipping systems than simply printing labels through a carrier website.
I’ve tested a lot of shipping platforms over the last couple of years for my eCommerce business (shipping fragile products like candles and porcelain), so I know how complex this gets!
In this guide, I’ll break down the best shipping software for dental labs, where they work well, and where they fall short, and most importantly, how you work out which is the best one for your business.
Why Shipping Matters So Much for Dental Labs

Dental labs ship fragile, high-priority products like crowns and dentures for specific patient appointments. A late delivery can disrupt surgeries and damage client relationships.
Without the right shipping software, growing labs face high shipping costs, manual bottlenecks, and missed deadlines.
The right shipping software can help you:
- Cut Shipping Costs: Carrier pricing adds up quickly when you’re shipping urgent orders. Shipping software gives you access to discounted rates without needing enterprise-level shipping volume or long carrier negotiations.
- Save Time: When you’re processing dozens or hundreds of cases daily, manually typing addresses becomes a bottleneck. Create labels faster and automate the shipping process to save time.
- Reduce Mistakes: The right system will track shipping information in one place and automate repetitive shipping tasks, reducing manual mistakes.
- Improve Customer Service: Good shipping software automatically sends tracking updates which saves time and reduces customer questions and complaints.
What to Look for in a Shipping System
Before jumping into my recommendations, here’s what actually matters.
1. Multi-Carrier Support
Dental labs often use multiple carriers depending on urgency and destination. For example, you may need UPS Next Day Air for urgent implant cases, while you might use FedEx Priority Overnight for national deliveries. Good software should compare rates instantly.
Labs sending work overseas also need software that can support customs handling, duties, and international carriers.
2. Reliability
You need to be able to rely on your software at any time of the day or night. Outages or problems with orders syncing can lead to mistakes and unhappy customers.
3. Automation Rules
Good shipping software helps you scale operations easily through automation software. For example, you could set a rule that creates overnight shipping labels for all orders marked urgent. These small automations save huge amounts of time.
4. Tracking & Notifications
Automatic tracking emails keep your customers happy and help reduce incoming support requests. I used to spend a huge amount of time dealing with customer queries for my eCommerce products, but this dramatically reduced as soon as I implemented customer delivery tracking.
5. Integrations
Don’t forget about how the system will work with the rest of your business! I use Shopify in my eCommerce business, so when I was searching for shipping software, it was essential that it integrated with it. Always think about the existing systems you use, whether that’s ecommerce platforms, lab management software, or custom portals.
Quick Summary
Short on time? Here’s a quick overview of my top shipping software options:
Software | Best For | Main Strength |
Shippo | Most rapidly growing dental labs | Best balance of simplicity, automation, and reliability |
ShipStation | Large enterprise-style labs | Advanced workflows and operational depth |
EasyPost | Custom software environments | API flexibility for developer teams |
Easyship | International-first labs | Cross-border shipping and customs handling |
Sendcloud | European dental labs | Strong EU carrier and VAT support |
For most rapidly growing dental labs, Shippo is a great tool all around because it scales well without adding enterprise-level complexity too early.
1. Shippo – Best Overall Shipping Software
If I had to recommend one platform to most dental labs, it would be Shippo. For me, it’s the perfect balance between simplicity and functionality, which makes it powerful enough for growing labs but still easy enough for smaller teams to learn quickly.
One thing I really like about Shippo is how easy it is to get started with it. When I tested it with Shopify and Amazon integrations, my orders synced almost immediately, and label creation was very straightforward.

Best For
It’s ideal for rapidly growing dental labs and multi-location labs, which need reliable shipping and easy-to-use automations.
What Shippo Does Well
Very Easy to Use
The dashboard is clean, modern, and easy to navigate. It doesn’t require any technical knowledge to get started, which is important for dental labs where shipping is handled by technicians or admin staff.
Once you have your connected stores and automated workflows set up then label creation becomes extremely fast.

Excellent Carrier Support
Shippo connects to more than 40 carriers globally, including UPS, FedEx, USPS, DHL, Royal Mail, and many regional services. You can access discounted carrier rates without needing large shipping contracts or minimum volume commitments, and compare rates instantly to balance speed with cost.
Simple Automation Rules
Shippo’s automation system is one of its best features. You can easily create automations based on order weight, item name, SKU, item quantity, and shipment destination, and then assign these to package templates.
You can also create IF/THEN rules very easily, for example, if a shipment is international, then automatically use DHL, and this removes a huge amount of repetitive work.
Reliable Performance
Shippo is also my top choice in terms of reliability. The platform is secure, orders sync quickly, and you can easily keep track of them through the dashboard.
This isn’t always the case. I’ve experienced syncing issues and outages with other platforms I’ve used, and it’s incredibly frustrating.

International Shipping
Shippo generates customs documents automatically for international shipments and works very well for global shipping. You still need to fill out customs information, but the platform streamlines the process significantly compared to handling it directly through carrier websites.
What I Didn’t Like
Shippo’s reporting is fairly basic, which for most dental labs probably won’t matter, but very large labs may want deeper analytics and operational reporting.
Pricing
Shippo has a free tier plus affordable paid plans starting at ~$17/mo for 200 labels. That pricing structure works well for growing labs because you can scale gradually without suddenly jumping into enterprise pricing.
2. ShipStation – Best for Large Dental Labs
ShipStation is a powerful shipping platform with a lot of advanced features. Where Shippo focuses on simplicity, ShipStation focuses on scale and complexity. But all those extra features can make the platform feel heavier and more confusing day-to-day.

Best For
Enterprise dental labs with high-volume operations (e.g 1,000+ orders monthly) with multi-warehouse or multi-location setups. Given the complexity of the product, it’s more suited to businesses with dedicated logistics teams.
What ShipStation Does Well
Deep Automation
ShipStation’s automation tools are extremely advanced. You can automate almost all aspects of the shipping process, including:
- Carrier selection
- Insurance
- Package dimensions
- Warehouse routing
- Customs workflows
- Team assignments
- Returns
- Batch processing
For example, a large lab could create automation rules to automatically route implant cases through overnight services or assign shipments to different fulfillment locations. These complex automations can save big businesses a lot of time.
Batch Processing
ShipStation is designed for high-volume environments, allowing you to process hundreds of labels at once. That’s going to be overkill for small or mid-sized dental labs, but ideal for large production labs.

Better Reporting
ShipStation’s reporting is more detailed than Shippo’s. You can track everything from carrier spend and shipping performance to team workflows. Again, this is going to be overkill for small labs, but some enterprise labs will need this level of operational data.
What I Didn’t Like
The platform is feature-rich, but that means it comes with a steeper learning curve. Compared to Shippo, it feels noticeably harder to navigate and configure, and small to mid-level labs will likely find it overwhelming.
There are also some reports of temporary outages and syncing delays during high-volume periods.
Pricing
ShipStation pricing scales with shipment volume and becomes more expensive at higher tiers. It offers a free trial for 50 labels with paid plans starting at $29.99 m/o for 100 orders.
3. EasyPost – Best for Custom Lab Systems
If your lab has developers or uses custom internal systems, EasyPost is certainly worth considering. Unlike the other tools in this list, it’s a shipping API rather than a shipping management system, which means that developers can add it directly into internal workflows.

Best For
Enterprise labs with developers and custom internal software.
What EasyPost Does Well
Customisation
Unlike the other shipping platforms in this guide that use web dashboards, EasyPost offers total customization. It acts as an invisible infrastructure layer, allowing your team to build shipping, tracking, and address verification features directly into your existing proprietary systems and user checkout.
Advanced Automation

Once set up, EasyPost enables you to run advanced automation without manual intervention. Your proprietary software can instantly and automatically compare live rates, choose the best carrier, and generate labels in seconds, saving huge amounts of time.
What I Didn’t Like
Unlike Shippo and ShipStation, where a non-technical manager can log in and start shipping packages immediately, EasyPost requires coding. So if a shipping rule breaks or you want to tweak how a label looks, you need a developer to update the code.
It doesn’t come with a built-in user interface to manage, search, or edit your pending orders, so you need to build that visual interface inside your own proprietary system.
This won’t be a problem for enterprise businesses with developers but it will be far too advanced for many dental labs.
Pricing
Easypost has a flexible, tiered pricing structure and also offers a free plan, including up to 3,000 shipping labels per month.
4. Easyship – Good for International Dental Labs
If your lab ships internationally every single day, then Easyship is worth a look.

Best For
Labs shipping cross-border daily, with teams needing customs and duties handling as well as global fulfillment workflows
What Easyship Does Well
Excellent International Tools
Easyship automatically calculates everything involved in international shipping, including duties, taxes, landed costs, and customs paperwork. This means the buyer can see the total delivery cost up front, preventing surprise fees and delays.
Huge Carrier Network

Easyship supports a large range of international carriers, including large global networks like DHL Express, but also local government postal networks, and hybrid services that combine cheap cross-border shipping with local postal services for final delivery.
What I Didn’t Like
From a user experience perspective, I found the platform to be a lot slower and less polished than platforms like Shippo. The automation tools are also more limited, particularly for domestic shipping, which comes with very basic if/then workflow rules.
Pricing
Pricing is based on your label volume and whether you use their pre-negotiated carrier rates or your own existing carrier accounts.
5. Sendcloud – Best for European Dental Labs
Sendcloud is heavily focused on Europe, so if your dental lab operates mainly in the UK and the European Union, then it’s a strong option.

Best For
UK and EU dental labs handling VAT-heavy shipping and regional European carrier workflows.

What Sendcloud Does Well
Strong European Carrier Support
Sendcloud integrates natively with over 100 European regional and national carriers (such as DPD, DHL Parcel, PostNL, Correos, Colissimo, Royal Mail, and Evri).
It also connects businesses to Europe’s largest network of over 390,000 localized service points and parcel lockers, so customers can easily choose “click-and-collect” options at checkout.
Great Returns & Tracking Experience
It offers polished, branded tracking and a seamless, self-service automated returns portal. Customers can log in, select the items they want to return, and automatically generate a return shipping label or a paperless QR code for mobile drop-offs.
VAT & Cross-Border Support
Shipping across European borders involves a lot of complexity, including VAT laws, customs declarations, and regional regulations. Sendcloud handles everything for you, from automatically generating the correct commercial invoices and customs documents to ensuring packages don’t get delayed or fined at customs checkpoints.
What I Didn’t Like
If you have customers in North America or the Asia-Pacific region, you’ll likely find the domestic carrier options and features limited.
Sendcloud also works out more expensive than other options in this list. It offers a very basic free tier for absolute beginners, but you need to pay for the more expensive packages to access additional features.
Pricing
Includes a free trial rising to £31/mo for additional features and shipping rates.
My Final Recommendation
The best shipping system for your business depends on your specific workflows and where your customers are based. For instance, businesses with a lot of European clients might lean toward Easyship, while businesses with internal developers might prefer EasyPost.
However, after trialling numerous shipping platforms, Shippo stands out for me as the best all-rounder for growing dental labs. It is consistently the easiest tool to use day-to-day, allowing you to get set up quickly and build custom automations without needing any technical knowledge.
Shippo also scales well. A growing lab can start with basic label printing, then gradually add automated workflows, multiple carriers, and API integrations as volume increases, without the headache of switching systems later.
Ultimately, in a dental lab, reliability and consistency matter far more than paying for hundreds of advanced features your team will never use.
