Ten GB may be plenty for a teen who spends much of the day connected to Wi-Fi at home or school and primarily uses cellular data for things like messaging, maps, checking email, or occasional social media. But for a teen who frequently streams videos, games, or social media away from Wi-Fi could use 10GB much more quickly. That’s why understanding your teen’s habits before choosing a plan can make such a difference.
Families with heavier data users can look at Straight Talk’s Platinum Unlimited plan, which is currently $65 per month – with additional savings available through Auto-Refill. It includes unlimited data, talk and text, unlimited mobile hotspot data, 500GB of cloud storage, global texting, and expanded international calling features.
Select Straight Talk unlimited plans also include a Walmart+ membership, which adds value beyond wireless service. For teens who already have an unlocked phone, Straight Talk’s Bring Your Own Phone (BYOP) StraightSavings! plan is another budget-friendly option. Plans start at just $25 per month, making it an affordable way to get reliable wireless service without paying for a new device.
2. AT&T Prepaid: Another Option to Compare
AT&T Prepaid offers several options at different price points, giving parents options to choose from depending on how much their teen uses their phone.
One of its more budget-friendly choices is the Unlimited Saver plan for $35 per month. It includes unlimited talk, text, and data, with the first 30GB of data at speeds up to 3mbps. After 30GB, speeds are reduced to 1.5Mbps. The plan also includes standard-definition streaming and AT&T ActiveArmor mobile security.
For teens who primarily need their phone for staying in touch, social media, music, maps, and everyday use, this could be a great option. A 5GB mobile hotspot add-on is available for an additional $10 per month.
For $45 per month, AT&T’s Unlimited Enhanced Plus plan is a great option for users who need unlimited talk, text, and data with 5G access, along with 10GB of mobile hotspot data. It also includes unlimited texting from the U.S. to more than 230 countries and territories, plus usage in Mexico and Canada. This may be a better fit for a teen who uses more data away from home or occasionally needs to connect a laptop or another device when Wi-Fi isn’t available.
When comparing these choices for your teen, think beyond the word “unlimited”. What we need to be thinking about is how fast the included data is, whether your teen needs hotspot access, and how much time they actually spend away from Wi-Fi. Paying more for additional features may make sense for the heavy data user, but there are more affordable plan options that could easily cover the everyday needs of a teen who spends most of their phone time connected to Wi-Fi.
Consider not only what you’ll pay each month, but how easily you can purchase the phone and plan, get everything set up, and manage the service going forward.
3. Cricket Wireless: Included Perks at the Higher Tier
Cricket Wireless offers several prepaid choices to choose from as well.
Ranging from 10GB all the way to multiple unlimited plans. Its Sensible 10GB plan is $35 per month before Auto Pay savings. It includes 10GB of high-speed data, unlimited talk and text within the U.S., and nationwide 5G access with a compatible device. After the 10GB high-speed allowance is used, data speeds are reduced. Customers can also purchase an additional 1GB of high-speed data for $10 if needed.
For heavier users, Cricket’s Supreme Unlimited plan costs $60 per month before Auto Pay savings and includes unlimited high-speed data, 50GB of cloud storage, and HBO Max Basic with Ads. It also includes calling and texting to Mexico and Canada and international texting to more than 200 countries and territories.
Those extras could make the higher monthly price worthwhile for some households, but parents should ask whether their teen will actually use them. A large hotspot allowance, for example, could be useful for a student who occasionally needs to connect a laptop when Wi-Fi isn’t available. Entertainment and cloud storage benefits may carry more value for one family than another.

Choosing your teen’s first phone and prepaid plan doesn’t have to feel overwhelming.
