The biggest decision most people make today when choosing a phone plan centers on T-Mobile vs. Verizon. Recent Billy Bob commercials poke fun at that truth, but today the majority of smaller cell phone companies, especially prepaid companies, use one or the other as a parent company/tower access.
So if you are trying to decide between a T-Mobile network value brand and a Verizon network value brand, here’s a quick side-by-side for Mint Mobile vs. Straight Talk.
Mint Mobile vs. Straight Talk: Bottom Line
- Mint Mobile: Best for people who can pay annually and use limited data.
- Straight Talk: Best for people who want flexibility with pricing, bundles, and perks.

Plans
Let’s start with a look at the basic plans for each:
Mint has four plans for phones:
- 5GB/mo
- 15GB/mo
- 20GB/mo
- Unlimited

They pretty much tell you everything you need to know in the name. You get unlimited talk and text with each of them, and are limited to the data you want to pay for.
StraightTalk offers four primary plans, too:
- Bronze
- Silver
- Gold
- Platinum

Note: The Silver unlimited plan can be set up in a 3-month, 6-month, or 12-month plan, maximizing savings.
Three of the plans have unlimited talk, text, and data. The differences have to do with features like cloud storage and hotspot data.
Bronze 10GB | Silver Unlimited | Gold Unlimited | Platinum Unlimited | |
Hotspot data | N/A | 10 GB | 30 GB | Unlimited |
Cloud Storage | N/A | N/A | 100 GB | 100 GB |
There are two other plans that include basic phone plans for flip phones and a special Nationwide plan for those who bring their own basic phone.
Perks
The plans you get with Mint Mobile don’t come with any perks. That’s part of the appeal for some people, that it’s a plain and simple option, but it can also impact the value for the money you are spending. They just recently added “minternet”, meaning you can now bundle home internet and a cell phone package to get discounts.
However, Straight Talk plans come with the option of bundling several other services like tablet, home phone, and internet options, which give you substantial discounts across all of those services. You can also get discounts if you add multiple lines, and if you pay for several months in advance.
Other perks include things like Walmart Plus subscriptions for some of the higher-tier plans, which would otherwise cost $100 annually and includes several subcategories of benefits like 25% off Burger King literally every day if you order through the app, not that I encourage people to eat Burger King every day. You can also get Peacock or Paramount Plus streaming for free, and discounts on things like pet services, pharmacy options, and gas. Who doesn’t like saving on gas?
Coverage
Mint Mobile is great for major cities because it uses the 5G T-Mobile network. This network is currently available across 36% of the United States. Straight Talk uses the Verizon network, which covers around 70% of the US with the 4G LTE footprint.

Straight Talk will typically have better signal penetration in big buildings and basements but older buildings won’t get the same penetration using the T-Mobile networks. This matters to people who live in areas prone to tornadoes or inclement weather and might have finished basements where being able to text someone upstairs to bring down more snacks is of critical importance.

Speed
Mint Mobile uses full T-Mobile network speeds, and according to the website, you won’t face any caps until you exceed your data limit. By comparison, with all but the most basic Straight Talk plan, there is unlimited data, so you will keep your normal speed unless things get congested.
You get a higher median download speed in major cities and urban areas using T-Mobile networks with Mint Mobile, compared to Straight Talk.
However, Straight Talk uses Verizon’s towers, so you get a more reliable signal in remote areas.
If you exceed your data limit, they don’t cut you off or anything, but they slow you down to 128 Kbps, which can feel basically the same as being cut off. Let’s actually talk a bit more about congestion.
Congestion Behavior
Both Straight Talk and Mint Mobile stipulate in the fine print that video streaming will drop to 480p during congestion and that all phone plans will experience lower speeds during times of heavy traffic. They actually have the same slow speeds during times of congestion, but this is where understanding T-Mobile versus Verizon is pretty important.

Verizon is accessible all over the country, one of the most accessible services in rural and remote areas outside of major cities.
T-Mobile, by comparison, is known for having incredibly fast 5G and 5G unlimited access in major cities.
So this means that people using T-Mobile in big cities might have 5G networks, but they also have higher urban density, which simply means more users at any given time. Respectively, this equates to a higher statistical likelihood of congestion and congestion that happens more frequently compared to suburban and remote areas using Verizon’s towers.
Pricing Structure
The biggest selling point to come out of Ryan Reynolds’ mouth always has to do with the pricing structure and how low the prices are for Mint Mobile. And they are, as long as you don’t read the fine print.
The pricing structure is laid out in a grid, with the left side panel indicating the level of gigabytes in your plan (5, 15, 20, or unlimited), and along the top rows, the price you get for the number of months you purchase.
There is no option for a single month of service, so at no point can you pay for one month at a time. The biggest discounts come from the biggest commitments, starting at 3 months and ranging upwards to one year. However, you have to pay for whatever amount of time that is upfront in a lump sum payment.
So, as a new customer, setting up a 15 GB plan, you would have to pay $60 up front for 3 months of service, $150 upfront for 6 months of service, or $240 for a year.
Ryan isn’t wrong, this is a very good discount as long as you have that kind of money up front.
Similarly, the best prices come with the lowest data plans, so if you don’t use a lot of data, there is something to be said for Mint Mobile options. As soon as you become a frequent data user, the unlimited plans from Straight Talk and the respective perks you get make Straight Talk a better option.
Straight Talk offers its most lucrative discounts to those who purchase larger packages like 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, or 12 months. The discounts go up as you increase the number of months, but, like Mint Mobile, you have to pay a lump sum up front for this entire time frame.
However, if you aren’t interested in saving $2 per month by paying in advance, you can simply purchase a plan at a one-month interval and renew it as frequently as you choose, maybe changing to a larger upfront payment when you are able.
Hotspot Policies

Mint Mobile offers some pretty impressive and unique hotspot options on their prepaid phone plans. Essentially, all of the plans can come with the option of setting up Hotspot data. They also come with the option of sharing your Hotspot data with several other devices.
That said, your respective Hotspot data is directly tied to the gigabytes you have with your plan, with a very important caveat: the unlimited plan, which has unlimited data, talk, and text, has a maximum cap of 20 GB of hotspot data.
Now, if you, like Joey from Friends, don’t like to share (food, or hotspot data) and more importantly, you specifically use your phone and your respective Hotspot data on a regular basis, the offerings from Straight Talk might be more up your alley.
There are several phone plans Straight Talk, each of which come with individual levels of specified Hotspot data, with a clear exception of the unlimited plan, which, as the name states, comes with unlimited hotspot data as well as unlimited data, talk, and text.
International Options

All of the Straight Talk plans come with international calling and texting to Mexico and Canada, with options of adding international calling on a case-by-case basis. Mint Mobile extends the international calling and texting to include the UK. There are several countries to which you can text for free, but if you want to make a phone call, you have to add money to your account beforehand. The pricing structure varies based on whether it’s a cell phone or landline, and which country you are calling with Mint Mobile.

Summing Up
The biggest decision between these two is going to come down to provider and coverage as well as pricing structure. The most affordable option comes from Mint Mobile, but that is also the option with the lowest data, so if you don’t use data and you live in a city, this can be a good choice.
Straight Talk comes with better benefits and opportunities to bundle multiple services in order to maximize your discounts with a lot of specialized features like discounts on multiple services, payments for multiple months, and international calling.
