One of the easiest ways to get recurring appointments for your salon is through memberships. Memberships can help build better cash flow for your salon and keep your clients coming back with things like subscriptions.
We use memberships much like a loyalty program, providing our clients with the opportunity to get discounts on services or redeem specific services and discounts every month. With this type of automatic billing, you can increase your customer retention and repeat business.
Realistically, though, you need good membership software to do that, and in my experience, this shouldn’t be a third-party platform that you have to use separately from other platforms like POS/booking, nor should it be something that you have to pay to integrate.
That’s why I looked at the best salon membership software from the standpoint of offering customized membership opportunities alongside other key features that every salon needs, including bookings, payments, and staff management features.
Here’s what I’ve found:
- Boulevard: This platform is absolutely best for small salons, Solo operators, or large salons that want to be able to provide membership packages with options to share benefits with other people to encourage referrals, commissions, and tools like the Precision Scheduling feature.
- Vagaro: This is best for salons that want the widest opportunity for sharing memberships and selling them on places like social media and the Vagaro marketplace (at an additional cost).
- Mangomint: This is best for salons that want easy membership management after selling, particularly those that want to be able to manage all their memberships in one place with color-coordinated visibility.
#1 Best Salon Membership Software: Boulevard
Boulevard is an all-in-one tool for salons, spas, and Med spas, designed by people with experience in these industries, specifically for these industries. Where the other key competitors might have similar features, at the end of the day, companies like Mangomint and Vargaro are designed for a broader range of service-based industries and therefore don’t have the same delicate features that are critical for salons and spas in particular.
How to Create Memberships
Under the “Manage Business” tab, you will find a button halfway down that says “Membership Plans.”
From there, you can create new membership plans by entering the name and description for that plan. The name and description are what clients will see when they book it online.
Internally, you can add the details of each membership plan that include the categories and specific functions like the Sharing Vouchers option, which enables perks to be shared between clients.
I think this is one of the better features you will find with the Boulevard salon membership software, and clients really appreciate it. If they pay for a new membership plan, there might be months when they can’t use specific perks or discounts, but they are allowed to share them with others, which can help encourage referrals and drive business.
From there, you set the price and how frequently it renews.
You even have options for charging tax based on location or enabling commissions for the sale of any given membership. These are small aspects to the membership software that Boulevard offers, which don’t exist with competitors yet truly speak to the insider knowledge associated with the creators specific to salons and spas.
How to Sell Memberships
There are so many ways that you can sell these memberships with Boulevard. When you are creating them, you have the option to manage the locations where these memberships apply, as well as which audience can purchase memberships (like returning versus new clients) and what perks and discounts apply.
If you are using location settings, you can sell them at specific locations and use the automated campaigns and other email blast campaign functions within the software to encourage purchases from new or existing clients based on location and audience.
Boulevard also makes it possible to generate links for these membership plans that you can embed in your email campaigns, on social media posts, or elsewhere.
If you are checking people out at the storefront after receiving a service, it can be added to the cart just the same as a client can add the membership to their cart when they are booking a service, either through your website or through another “book now” button integrated in pages like social media.
Biggest Advantage
The Sharing Vouchers feature is a great way to ensure clients naturally refer other people to you when they are unable to use all of their vouchers. Plus, it helps build better satisfaction with your salon or spa.
Boulevard’s Precision scheduling feature means that when you offer membership packages with several services, clients can book all of those services at any time, and the software will automatically place the services in the order in which they should be scheduled, like a facial after a massage.
Biggest Disadvantage
The biggest disadvantage is the price. A lot of customers see the highest tier price of over $400 and immediately disregard Boulevard as a top contender, but you can start as a solo provider or even a small, single-location salon at half that price and still use all of the features they have.
#2 Best Salon Membership Software: Vagaro
Vagaro is an inexpensive, all-in-one option for salons, fitness studios, spas, tattoo artists, nail techs, and other service businesses. It is designed to scale based on the size of your business so it works for solo providers who want affordable features like customer data tracking, online payments, memberships, CRM features, POS, marketing tools, and of course, memberships.
I like Vagaro for its simplicity and the a la carte options it has; while the cost seems much lower compared to the other options on this list, that’s because it’s designed with bare bones services to which you can add a la carte features on a monthly basis, including being featured on the Vagaro Marketplace and selling memberships on social media.
How to Create Memberships
Creating memberships can be done directly within your settings. The Vagaro settings lists “Things We Sell” with it, the area for setting up new memberships.
The process is very simple: you fill in the details for the membership, the frequency for charges and auto-renewal settings, and any benefits associated with it.
From there, you can save that particular membership, and it will be available wherever you choose to advertise for your customers to purchase.
How to Sell Memberships
One of the things I really like about Vagaro is that you can sell memberships in multiple ways, including:
- Directly from your website or booking page
- On social media
- From within the Vagaro Marketplace
Vagaro is one of the best providers of Salon software that also comes with a client-facing or customer-facing marketplace.
In order to list your salon on this marketplace and utilize this opportunity, you will likely have to pay a small fee depending on the level of membership you have. However, once you have your business profile on the Vagaro Marketplace, anyone in your area looking for services that you might offer can purchase the memberships directly through that platform once they have signed up.
You can also create direct purchase links through the settings by navigating to “Things We Sell” and finding the “Memberships” tab. Vagaro makes it easy to choose a membership (assuming you want to set up more than one), create a link, and then post that link into things like direct messages or social media pages from which potential clients can easily purchase memberships. This includes:
- Yelp
And of course, you can always sell these memberships at checkout, adding it to the shopping cart and letting them fill in things like the payment date and the auto-renewal process, the frequency of that charge, and other benefits that might be associated with the membership plan.
Biggest Advantage
The marketplace. This is a great way to sell memberships at a discount and potentially increase your overall bookings/revenue.
Biggest Disadvantage
The downside is that when clients buy a membership through Vagaro, they now have to sign up for the service, and that means Vagaro has direct access to your client contact information, and they will spam them with marketing messages that are unrelated to your business.
#3 Best Salon Membership Software: Mangomint
Mangomint is a popular alternative to Vagaro, somewhere between Vagaro and Boulevard in my opinion.
They are just as expensive as Boulevard but designed as a more all-in-one option for massage studios, barbershops, wellness centers, IV therapy studios, hair salons, and beauty studios.
The company makes it pretty easy to update payment methods, cancel, or pause memberships directly from the membership dashboard, where everything is color coordinated with green for “active” memberships, yellow for “payment due”, and orange for “unpaid.”
How to Create Memberships
Creating memberships can be done directly within your settings. Here you can set up the type of membership plan, like a regular manicure or pedicure plus a 30-minute massage or a 30-minute facial, for a total of $120 per month.
Once you have the type of membership plan, you set the price, how frequently it is billed, and then you can start selling.
As you are setting up memberships, you can create plans that automatically apply discounts on things like services or products, like 15% off any additional services that are booked on top of the monthly membership or 20% off retail products.
The company is very good about creating simple memberships, but they are even better when it comes to the layout of the membership management page. This part of the software is gamified in a way that makes it very easy to eyeball how effective and active individual memberships are and when and where specific clients might be overdue or need to set up a manual payment.
How to Sell Memberships
One of the main ways you can sell your memberships is similar to Boulevard; you can send automated flows and automated campaigns from within the platform to any members who have the membership.
Alternatively, you can use the same type of structure to send automated campaigns to new clients, letting them know about the membership plans.
Clients can purchase memberships online when they book an appointment by adding the membership to their cart, or they can purchase directly from your website. Mangomint lets you add direct purchase links to social media, marketing campaigns, or other messages, just like Vagaro.
You can also let clients manage their memberships directly with the client portal so they can see any services they have left, update their payment method, or cancel the membership without having to call your front desk.
Biggest Advantage
How easily you can manage all of your memberships within the platform. They have a separate section that increases visibility with simple toggle switches and color coordination for active versus inactive memberships.
Biggest Disadvantage
The platform doesn’t come with the same features as Boulevard, so if, for example, you are selling memberships that allow your clients to pick and choose one of two available services out of two different categories each month, you can’t take advantage of things like Precision Scheduling. That can make bookings a bit more challenging.
Summing Up
There are three main competitors for the best salon membership software. Boulevard is the best for salons that want specific perks like sharing memberships with friends, the Precision Scheduling feature, or commissions for staff. Vagaro is best for salons that want to sell memberships on the Vagaro platform, and Mangomint is best for salons that want easy membership management after selling.
