Mangomint has a lot of potential for spa and salon owners. There were so many things to like about it, particularly the quick customer service response and all of the extra features that you get, even with lower tiers of service. Unfortunately, they are missing some key features that can leave clients disappointed.

So, having worked with multiple platforms, I’m going to show you how my favorite Mangomint alternatives cover what’s missing from these key features.

The Platforms I’m Looking At

All of the following platforms are great alternatives to Mangomint. Let’s take a look at them side by side to show when you should consider them as a replacement.

  • Acuity
  • Varago
  • Boulevard
  • Calendly (I’ve included this here because I know so many salon owners who use this for booking)
  • Goldie

Best Alternative

Upfront, my favorite alternative to Mangomint was Boulevard. Boulevard has an equally stunning layout with an easy-to-use interface but with core features and booking functions that compensate for the integration and features Mangomint lacks, the scalability Goldie lacks, the hidden fees of Vagaro, and the customer service of Acuity.

Mangomint Alternatives

Why You Might Need Mangomint Alternatives

When we switched to Mangomint a while back, we wanted to make our system more automated so that we didn’t have to employ a full-time staff to manage the front desk. We knew that the monthly cost for Mangomint was two times more expensive than what we were currently paying and three times more expensive than some of the cheaper options on the market, but in theory it would have saved us a lot long-term.

We also needed clients to be able to reschedule their appointments and add tipping options after a service.

The biggest pros were the following:

  • Waiting room features
  • Customer service responsiveness
  • Interface
  • Communication with clients

The biggest cons, though, that eventually forced us to look elsewhere were:

  • High price tag
  • A lot of work for staff and clients
  • Problems with core services like tipping and rescheduling

If your business is looking to save money, have simplified core services, and easy onboarding, you might want to consider some alternatives to Mangomint.

My Mangomint Pain Points and How the Alternatives Stack Up

#1: Pricing and Features

There is no free version of Mangomint, but you can nab a free trial. After that, Mangomint has three price levels:

  1. Essentials: This is the most basic option for small businesses between 2 and 10 service providers at $165 per month.
  2. Standard: This is the next level for medium businesses up to 20 service providers at $245 per month.
  3. Unlimited: This is the most expensive option for large businesses over 20 service providers at $375 per month.

The essentials plan has things like:

  • A calendar feature and scheduling
  • Online booking
  • Mobile apps
  • Reporting
  • POS and payments
  • Staff management

The standard is the same as the essentials, but it has added options for memberships, a virtual waiting room, HIPAA compliance, and express booking.

The unlimited has all of the same features as the standard, but with custom APIs available and Shopify and other integrations included.

One of the reasons we haven’t worked with Mangomint for long is that they don’t integrate with QuickBooks. In fact, unless you are able to pay for the unlimited service, they don’t have a lot of API integrations with other software. That’s a huge problem for small and medium sized businesses, especially those trying to keep their costs down.

So, how do others compare?

  • Vagaro: Here you have significantly more affordable plans starting at $30 per month. This plan is for one employee and it goes up by $10 increments up to seven employees at which point your monthly price will max out at $90. However, a large portion of their features come at an additional monthly cost so you are basically adding a lot of a la carte options that can quickly add up.
  • Acuity: Acuity is a slightly more affordable option that has four levels, starting at an emerging business at only $16 per month and going up to an enterprise business with custom pricing based on the features you add. The features you get even at the Enterprise level are somewhat limited with simple things like payment processing, client self-scheduling, and one bookable calendar at the basic level but up to 36 bookable calendars for multiple employees at the PowerHouse level.
  • Calendly: Calendly has a free version for personal use. For small teams, you start at $10 per month and grow up to Enterprise levels at $15,000 per year, but this has a wide range of flexibility for things like Microsoft Dynamics and Salesforce connections as well as connections to multiple calendars, marketing software, and more.
  • Boulevard: Boulevard charges $175 per month which is almost the same as the essentials, the bare minimum level of Mangomint, but you don’t have to pay based on additional features, everything is included.
  • Goldie: Goldie has a free version for basic personal use as well as three other levels based on the size of your team, starting at $20 per month and ranging to $400 per year. The features you get are much more limited compared to Boulevard or Vagaro.

When you look at the features and the price, Boulevard is a much better alternative than Mangomint, and you don’t have to worry about additional pricing for added features. However, if your company is looking for the most limited features at the cheapest price, free versions or entry-level versions of Acuity are best.

#2: Onboarding and Customer Service

I will say that one of the best things about Mangomint is the onboarding process. I’ve tried onboarding with MindBody, Vagaro, and Zenoti, and it has been really difficult to get a hold of someone and feel like we mattered, especially as a smaller business with the lower tier.

Mangomint has a lot of customer support for those who are transitioning and implementing the software in exchange for something else. They are surprisingly responsive. The interface is pretty easy to understand as well but despite the great customer service, payroll onboarding was still a little clunky. I didn’t have a good time with that and the fact that they didn’t interface with QuickBooks meant we had to look for alternatives.

So, what are the top Mangomint alternatives to consider if payroll onboarding is a problem?

  • Vagaro: The onboarding support you get with Vagaro is pretty comprehensive. You have a lot of documents you can read, videos you can watch, as well as in-person and live online options for your employees.
  • Acuity: Acuity has videos and webinars to help your staff get accustomed to the layout but nothing in person or live online.
  • Calendly: Calendly has videos, live online options, documentation, and webinars so the support you get for your staff is surprisingly better than Acuity and almost on point with Vagaro.
  • Boulevard: The onboarding here is very comprehensive. You can complete live online training and in-person training, watch webinars, and get access to online training materials for your staff members.
  • Goldie: Goldie has very limited onboarding, with some videos and articles you can read on their website and a few live online options.

If you have staff who need a lot of support navigating new technology, Vagaro and Boulevard have the most comprehensive range of learning materials available.

#3: User-Friendliness and Deployments

When I briefly used Mangomint, I truly enjoyed the fact that they had customizable menus with easy online booking for our clients, and client chats that everyone on the staff could have access to.

However, the downside was that the kiosk options only worked with iPads, and our business didn’t have iPads, so we had to make an additional investment. We found a way to make it work, but not all businesses can.

So, if you want kiosk options that work beyond iPads, there are some alternatives to Mangomint to consider:

  • Vagaro: Vagaro has a lot of options for customizing the layout as well, with a less Easter-egg-looking layout. The calendar sections for appointments are also more intuitive. Deployment options are wide-ranging, too, so you aren’t stuck with buying new iPads like we did.
  • Acuity: Acuity has deployments available through cloud, Saas, and web-based options or through mobile devices. The layout is very perfunctory, with all of the items you need in a no-nonsense sort of professionalism.
  • Calendly: Calendly has a sparse layout. Without a lot of features, their interface isn’t overcrowded. The deployment is the same as Acuity’s.
  • Boulevard: Boulevard also has the same deployments as Acuity, with applicability on Android, iPhone, and iPad options as well as cloud, SaaS, and web-based use. Their layout, however, is by far the easiest to use, with a color scheme, font, size, and structure that is highly intuitive.
  • Goldie: Goldie has very limited deployments, mostly mobile, and the layout looks more like a game app than anything else.

Overall, this one’s a toss-up between Vagaro, Acuity, and Boulevard for me. If your company is looking for better deployment and user interfaces across multiple devices, I wouldn’t go with Goldie or Calendly.

#4: Customer Interactions

Mangomint makes it a little bit easier for employees to manage things like customer chats and customize the menus but it leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to customer interactions, particularly as it relates to rescheduling appointments.

So, how do others compare?

  • Vagaro: On the business end, it can be difficult to find what you are looking for when using platforms like Vagaro. This makes it difficult for customers and employees alike, with a lot of downtime and embarrassing searching. If your priority is to provide a comprehensive internal platform for your employees and you are willing to invest a lot in training, this can make things a little bit easier on the back end.
  • Acuity: Acuity is a lot easier for all clients to use, especially older clients who don’t have a lot of tech-savvy. If your priority is making things easier on the front end for your clients, Acuity is simpler.
  • Calendly: Calendly is easy to set up and automate. It’s very simple to exchange services or change appointments, unlike Mangomint, but it can be more challenging for older clients who want to add services or modify existing appointments.
  • Boulevard: Boulevard has a similar layout to Vagaro but the menu options are much easier to access. Appointments and communication have simple, visually friendly layouts so communication privately with customers or in real time to process transactions is very simple to navigate.
  • Goldie: Goldie is very easy, reliable, with simple client reminders and it works extremely well for small businesses who want efficiency. If you don’t want a receptionist working full-time on simple business matters, Goldie serves as a great replacement, but not all the options are available for every plan.

If your business needs to cater to older clients, Acuity is much better, but if you have a broad range of clients with multiple levels of technical understanding, Boulevard offers the widest range of options on both the back end and the front end.

Summing Up

There are a lot of good things to be said for each of the top alternatives to Mangomint listed above and which one works best for your company is based on the needs you are prioritizing whether that is pricing, deployment options, and user-friendliness, or onboarding support.

By and large, however, Boulevard is my top favorite. It is the easiest to use by far out of all spa and salon software options I have ever tried. I don’t have to worry about hidden fees, glitches, poor customer service when something goes wrong, or customers who are waiting on me to navigate the system and find the right button for a gift card, tip, or appointment change.
