Choosing the right payment solution for your business can feel like an uphill battle. Between the varying features, pricing, and accounting integrations, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. The choice can feel particularly high-stakes for small and medium-sized businesses because there’s not much wiggle room in your budget.

The upside of the abundance of choices is that you have the freedom to pick the software that’s best suited for your business’ unique needs. If you’re conflicted between choosing Melio or Veem to manage your payments, you should know that while both are reliable, they’re tailored toward different audiences. Both can help you pay your vendors on time and keep track of your bills, as well as collect payments from customers. However, Veem has more cross-border capabilities than Melio, but Melio is a far more robust platform and has the edge when it comes to integrations.

Let’s explore the ins and outs of Melio and Veem to help you choose the payment solution that best fits your needs.

What are Melio and Veem?

What to Know About Melio

Melio is an AP/AR powerhouse. It helps businesses of all sizes pay their vendors, contractors and other bills, like rent and utilities, in a streamlined way that saves valuable time. On the AR side, you can quickly make customized invoices that allow your customers to pay you within minutes, choosing their preferred option. They can pay by card or by ACH bank transfer.

It’s not an industry-specific software. Restaurants, nonprofits, e-commerce and more can reap benefits from Melio. While it’s mainly geared toward the US market, it supports payments to international vendors as well.

What to Know About Veem

Like Melio, Veem helps you manage both your receivables and payments, but it is geared more toward businesses with frequent cross-border payments. However, you can still use it for domestic payments as well. It supports several payment methods: Veem Wallet, bank transfer (US and Canada), debit or credit card, and even check. Veem Wallet allows you to send USD payments internationally. It’s instant and cost-free.

Here’s a detailed breakdown of how Melio and Veem compare.

Setup and Getting Started

When you decide on a new payment solution, you want to be able to get it going ASAP. If a program is complicated to set up, it can detract from the user experience and cause more frustration than it’s worth, leaving a sour taste in your mouth before you’ve even started.

  • Melio: One of Melio’s major selling points is its ease of use. The company boasts that the time to set up a merchant account is under two minutes. Once your account is ready, you’re good to go. You can start issuing invoices and getting paid in no time.
  • Veem:  Similar to Melio, Veem claims that the sign-up process takes only a few minutes. Once you enter your business information and connect your bank account, you can begin sending and receiving payments globally.

Verdict: Both Melio and Veem have easy setups, but Melio edges in front of Veem on this one.

Payment Fees

If you make high volumes of payments, transaction fees can add up greatly over time. Let’s take a look at the fees associated with Melio and Veem so you can see what you’d be looking at.

  • Melio: For most card payments, there’s a 2.9% fee, which either you or your customers can cover. Payments to a bank account are typically free. Global payments can be more costly. For payments in USD, international bank payments by ACH have an associated $20 flat fee. Global payments by card also have a $20 fee, but this is on top of the 2.9% fee previously discussed.
  • Veem: The cheapest way to send and receive payments with Veem is using Veem Wallet, which is a digital account that’s included with every user profile, and it’s usually faster than a standard bank transfer.

Sending and receiving payments using your Veem Wallet is free, but there are potential fees associated with funding it and withdrawing from it. If you fund it using a domestic bank transfer, wire transfer or virtual debit card, you won’t face any costs. However, for US and international debit cards, the fees are 1.5% and 2%, respectively.

Verdict: If you’re paying by card or making an international payment, Veem is the cheaper option when it comes to fees, but Melio gives you more flexibility.

Payment Delivery Time

While fees can be a critical factor in deciding which software to choose, knowing how soon you’ll get your funds is a big deal, too. With both platforms, the delivery time of your payments depends on which payment method you use.

  • Melio: Some of the fastest payment methods at Melio are instant delivery, single-use virtual card and same-day bank transfer. Instant delivery can transfer funds in only minutes. If your vendor signs up for a single-use virtual card, payment is processed instantly. Like the name says, same-day bank transfer can transfer payment within the day. International payments take longer. For example, an international payment in USD made via bank transfer can have a delivery time of up to five business days.
  • Veem: The fastest way to make and receive payments is with Veem Wallet. Fund transfers are instant regardless of whether you’re using a US or international debit card. For other payment methods, it takes an average of between two and four business days for funds to arrive.

Verdict: Melio and Veem both provide fast payment options, allowing you to transfer funds instantly. For international transactions, Veem may be the speedier choice depending on which payment method you use, for all others, Melio might be the better option.

International Payments

While both Melio and Veem allow you to make and receive international payments, their scopes differ.

  • Melio: You can send and receive payments in 15 different currencies.
  • Veem: You can send and receive payments in over 100 countries in more than 80 unique currencies.

Verdict: Veem dominates when it comes to the sheer number of currencies supported, but Melio can do the job just fine if the number of currencies you deal with is limited.

Plans and Pricing

Let’s get into the meat of the issue. What kinds of plans and prices will you be looking at?

  • Melio: There are five different plans available to you: Go, Core, Boost, Unlimited and Platinum.
  • Go is Melio’s free plan. It only supports one user, and you’re limited to five free ACH payments per month. You can sync to QuickBooks Online and Xero, but you’re limited to 10 syncs per month, per platform.
  • Core, which comes at a cost of $25 monthly, is a step up. Your free ACH payments increase to 20 per month. It also allows for W-9 collection, 1099 automation and priority chat support. Syncs to QuickBooks Online and Xero are unlimited. Keep in mind that the $25 fee is for one user, and your monthly cost will go up by $10 for every additional user.
  • Boost, which is $55 monthly, also charges $10 for every additional user. You get 50 free ACH payments per month. On top of everything from the Core plan, you can apply vendor credits, sync to QuickBooks Desktop (not just QuickBooks Online) and access premium phone support.
  • Unlimited is highlighted as Melio’s “best-value” plan. It’s a flat $80 monthly for unlimited users, and ACH payments are also unlimited.
  • Platinum is Melio’s custom plan best-suited for high-volume businesses.
  • Veem: With Veem, there are only two options for you to choose from: Basic or Premium.
  • Basic is Veem’s free plan. Some of the features of the Basic plan are unlimited payment options, global instant deposits and free international bank transfers. Domestic transfers will cost you $1 per transaction.
  • Premium, which costs $24.99 monthly, has all the same features of the Basic plan, plus a handful of extras. A major selling point of the Premium plan is that you no longer have to pay the $1 fee for domestic transfers. Premium also provides mass pay, integrations with accounting software and payment reminders. You’re not limited to one user, either. You can add multiple users to your account.

Verdict: If you’re focused solely on minimizing costs, Veem will usually be the cheaper option, with its Premium plan priced at under $25 monthly. However, Melio gives you far more options and flexibility, and they can work with you to create a custom plan if you’re a high-volume business, which is something that Veem currently doesn’t offer.

Mobile Capabilities

Mobile apps are crucial if you want to manage your AR and AP on the go.

  • Melio: Melio has a dedicated app that you can download for free from either the Apple’s App Store or Google Play. While you won’t get the same full experience like you do with Melio.com, the app lets you make payments and track your bills. You can opt to use your phone’s face recognition or fingerprint features to log in securely.
  • Veem: Veem doesn’t have a mobile app at all. However, you can use the website on mobile if you choose to do so. It’s designed to be mobile-friendly.

Verdict: If mobile is important to you, Melio is the way to go, period.

Accounting Integrations

When shopping around for a new payment solution, a common pain point for potential customers is incompatibility with their existing accounting software. Fortunately, both Melio and Veem have integration capabilities.

  • Melio: Depending on your plan, you can sync your vendor payments, outgoing payments and incoming payments to and from QuickBooks Online, QuickBooks Desktop and Xero. If you’re an Amazon Business customer, you can connect your account to Melio and import your invoices to streamline your payments.
  • Veem: With Veem, you can sync your client and vendor details, bills, invoices and payment information to QuickBooks Online, Xero and NetSuite.

Verdict: The winner here depends on what integrations you need. Both have QuickBooks Online and Xero covered. However, if you want to sync with QuickBooks Desktop or import from Amazon Business, Melio fits your needs. If NetSuite integration is a priority, choose Veem instead.

Security

Financial fraud can be ruinous to a business, so keeping your transactions as secure as possible is a must.

  • Melio: Melio uses multi-factor authentication for logging in, and security monitoring occurs 24/7. The company doesn’t store any of your sensitive card data. Instead, a third-party card processor, which is PCI-compliant, is used. PCI-compliant means that a company meets standards set by the Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council. Your bank details are kept private; they’re never shared with outside parties like your vendors or customers.
  • Veem: Like Melio, Veem also uses multi-factor authentication. All data is encrypted, helping to prevent unauthorized access. The company conducts regular risk checks and platform monitoring to detect potential issues, and they are also PCI-compliant.

Verdict: Both platforms have strong security features to protect your financial data. As to which one is more secure, it’s a toss-up.

Customer Support

Once you’re a customer, you want to know that you’ll be treated well in case any issues or questions arise.

  • Melio: With Melio, the level of support you get depends on your plan. With the Go plan (free), you get live chat support and dedicated email support. The next plan up, Pro, also gives you priority support. The Boost plan includes all the support functions previously stated, as well as premium phone support. Lastly, the Unlimited plan gives you a dedicated account manager.
  • Veem: If you decide to use Veem, you’ll have access to 24/7 live support through three different avenues: chat, email and phone. Given their international focus, support is multilingual.

Verdict: Both Melio and Veem have several customer support options, but Melio takes a more hands-on approach with larger and enterprise clients.

Final Thoughts

Both Melio and Veem have strong AP/AR capabilities. The right one for you depends on your specific requirements. Where Veem has the edge is with its international payments. If you need to make transactions in a currency that isn’t supported by Melio, there’s a good chance it may be supported by Veem. However, Melio is the better choice if you want a mobile app and if you want to sync with QuickBooks Desktop and Amazon Business. The two platforms are pretty similar, and it’s up to you to determine which is the right fit.
